透射是入射光經過折射穿過物體後的出射現象。被透射的物體為透明體或半透明體,如玻璃,濾色片等。若透明體是無色的,除少數光被反射外,大多數光均透過物體。

為了表示透明體透過光的程度,通常用入射光通量與透過後的光通量之比τ來表徵物體的透光性質,τ稱為光透射率。

從色彩的觀點來說,每一個透明體都能夠用光譜透射率分布曲線來描述,此光譜透射率分布曲線為一相對值分布。

通常在測量透射樣品的光譜透射率時,還應以與樣品相同厚度的空氣層或參比液作為標準進行比較測量。
